bassmekanik.com presents “freakaboom - musical accessories for the mind”, a 72 minute continuously mixed cd featuring the 12” vinyl releases of freakaboom, a london, uk based label that specializes in the sound of futuristic nu-skool electro.
freakaboom is fronted by justin owen, a.k.a. databass, and while not being exactly a mainstream record label has certainly garnered more publicity and attention than most of it’s “underground” contemporaries. the sound of freakaboom is rooted firmly in the tradition of classic electro, but on top of this solid foundation lies a completely different and x-tremely
captivating layer of very contemporary beat slicing and sample manipulation. in fact, while justin’s heart may beat in the old school his production style is totally current and owes an equal debt to the currently popular sound of nu-skool breakz. the music is, to quote the well known dj magazine -”full to the brim with banging breaks, crazy acid and more sci-fi
effects than the sound room at star trek, this definitely works”. or in the words of neil hinchley from the bbc- “databass rocks my world” !!! the sound of electro has always been a major influence on the techno bass style, and one of the elements that particularly interested bassmekanik.com in releasing this project were the phat, juicy electro style basslines
underpinning the rockin’ beats. recent sales trends point to the fact that the bass audience is increasingly gravitating towards the sounds of dance and electronica and freakaboom fits firmly into this emerging mold.
